Feasibility Study for the Creation of a Solid Waste Master Plan

City of Fez, Morocco

Project Description:

The City of Wilaya in Fez (population 800,000) lacked a comprehensive waste management plan, which in-turn has had a direct negative impact on the city. In 1995, the city spent approximately $150,000 annually in managing solid waste, and yet municipal solid waste was often not collected and therefore, accumulated in ditches around the city. This situation threatened the population's health, created the potential for water contamination, and undermined the growth of tourism. To address this problem, the United States Trade and Development Agency and the President of Wilaya in Fez selected Edgeboro International, Inc. to conduct a feasibility study to determine alternative methods of waste management.

Approach:

Working with Sadat Associates, an Environmental Engineering firm, Edgeboro International, Inc. conducted a study of the present situation, current collection practices, and the structure of waste management in the city. The results of this initial evaluation were used to prepare a solid waste master plan for the city.
