6-mile Methane Pipeline Project

NERC, Trumball Connecticut

Sayreville, Edison, East Brunswick, NJ

Project Description:

The Middlesex County Utilities Authority (MCUA) approved a plan for a state-of-the-art system that will utilize the methane gas produced from decomposing solid waste in the Middlesex County Landfill, to generate both electrical power and significant cost savings for the MCUA. The project included the construction of a comprehensive network of pipelines, through which the methane gas was collected from three area landfills, and transported to an electrical power generator at the MCUA's Sayreville headquarters.

Edgeboro International, Inc. (EII) has operated the landfill gas collection and control systems for the following landfills: Edgeboro Landfill, Middlesex Landfill, Edison Landfill and ILR Landfill from 1947 to 2005.

Approach:

EII was retained to install six miles of pipeline through various elements, including solid waste, soil, hazardous waste sites, wetlands, tidal areas, and two river crossings. A 16-inch methane gas main was installed by Edgeboro International to interconnect NERC's three landfills to supply methane gas fuel to a newly constructed 18-megawatt power plant. Construction involved trenching through the above elements at depths of 5-10 feet in which SDR 32.5 16- inch pipe was laid within the specifications and requirements of the owner. The project was completed on time and on budget and was awarded 2001 project of the year by the United States Environmental Protection Agency USEPA , Landfill Methane Outreach Program.
